The cheetah is a large feline the size of a panther but as slender as a greyhound with long, thin legs. The head, small and rounded, ends in a short muzzle. The female cheetah has cubs at any time of the year. Each litter gives birth to two, three or four blind pups, with blue-gray coats, after 90 to 95 days of gestation.
In Algeria, the cheetah probably inhabited the entire south of the country. It was found regularly in the mountainous regions of the central Sahara, notably in the Tassili massifs, where a few individuals were still seen in the 19th century.
Currently, the Tassili cheetah is on the list of protected species.
The situation is extremely worrying and requires urgent action, such as the creation of integral reserves within national parks.
