50th Anniversary of August 20, 1955 - National Mujahid Day
On August 20, 1955, and under the command of the shahid "Youcef ZIGHOUT", head of the second zone, attacks, targeting police and gendarmerie posts, and colonial farms, were planned and launched throughout northern Constantine.
These attacks aimed to give a strong boost to the Revolution with a view to extending it to urban cities and large towns, and to deal a strong blow to the enemy's troops. They also succeeded in forcing the blockade imposed on the Aurès area and denying French allegations which claimed that the events recorded here and there were the actions of small outlaw groups.
These operations also coincided with the anniversary of the exile of Sultan Mohammed V, thus generating great solidarity between the people of the Maghreb countries.
However, the response of the colonial authorities was of unparalleled savagery: a major campaign of repression and arrests was launched against civilian citizens, thus generating more than ten thousand Algerian Chahids.
The operations of August 20, 1955 were crowned by important victories.
They guaranteed the unity of the common future of the Arab Maghreb, and brought the Algerian cause to the agenda of the United Nations. Finally, they confirmed that the Algerian Revolution was a popular Revolution whose noble objective was the independence of the country.
