Lighthouse Fort (Bordj El Manar)
Algeria conceals unsuspected cultural treasures which bear witness to the richness and diversity of its centuries-old past. Its strategic location exposed it to colonial desires and attempted invasions.
In order to repel any enemy action targeting the port and inland towns, the Turks built a string of fortifications and defensive batteries. The latter, considered the true protection of the capital, were established all around Algiers.
Lighthouse Fort (Bordj El Manar)
Bordj El Manar was built by Andalusians at the end of the 15th century, on the westernmost island, to serve as a lighthouse.
Modified several times according to different historical events, this tower ended up being, at the beginning of the 19th century, the most important work of the port. It is on it that the lighthouse is erected.
This fortification, circular in shape (60 m in diameter) has 4 levels of embrasures, is protected by a 5 meter wide ditch and houses a cistern and a powder magazine.
