Fort Santa Cruz (Bordj El Djebel)
Built by the Spanish at the top of the mountain of 'Sidi Aidour' above Fort Saint Grégoire, the name 'Santa Cruz' was given to it to perpetuate the memory of the last governor of Oran. Chroniclers set different dates for the creation of this work. It was armed with 300 cannons, given the importance of its location which overlooked the city and its port.
In 1708, 'the Bey Bouchelaghem' subjected this Fort to an intensive bombardment and reduced the 112 occupants to slaves. Fort Santa Cruz was renovated by the Spanish in 1738, under the authority of 'General Vallejo'. After the French occupation, in 1830, this Fort underwent a second wind of renewal and was baptized 'La Sainte-Croix'.
