It is one of the largest wading birds. It is recognizable by its long beak, red legs, large neck, short tail and white and black plumage. His appearance is imposing. Its height is 102 cm.
This stork lives in cultivated countryside and in humid meadows. It nests on houses, in towers or on large trees. This species has undergone a gradual evolution, since the numbers increased from 1375 pairs in 1993 to 3500 pairs in 2000. The concentration of this wading bird is very significant at the Tell where 75% of the population is located in the east of the country.
The southernmost nesting region is located in Béchar. Storks are generally silent, but whistle when bothered. The stork rests its long beak on the neck, adopting a very curious attitude to sleep. It rests at night on a few high perches, and feeds on reptiles, frogs and insects.
