Considered a passing visitor, it differs from the white stork by its black plumage, with the exception of the belly which is white. Immature, these storks are more brown than black, particularly on the head and neck. Their height is 97 cm.
During the migration period, they frequent open places and nest on trees or rocks. The recent increase in European breeding numbers increases the chances of sightings, especially in the humid areas of the northwest.
Individuals cross Algeria through its extreme west (Tindouf) to winter in Tropical Africa. This wading bird feeds in marshes in wooded areas. It is less sociable than the white stork, but noisier.
