The spoonbill is a fairly rare wading bird. Its silhouette and size are reminiscent of an all-white heron, but differs in its long black spoon-shaped beak at the tip. The adult has an orange pectoral band and, in spring, a long orange-yellow occipital crest. The white spatula measures 86 cm. This bird is found in fresh water and nests in colonies in trees, bushes and reed beds in marshy areas.
Recent sightings are sporadic and come from Kharouba, Réghaïa and Boughzoul. The spoonbill is a silent waterbird.
