National Day
This year, after San Francisco (California) in 2005, the celebration of World Environment Day, scheduled for June 5, will take place in Algiers, declared the “World Environmental Capital.” This day, which has been celebrated since 1972, will celebrate its 34th anniversary in Algeria.
To prepare for this day, an interministerial committee was tasked with implementing a program of events. This program contains several components including the scientific and ecological components but also the environmental, artistic and cultural aspects. Finally, communication and awareness will complete the program for this day which is placed under the theme “Don’t desert the arid zones!” (Don’t desert dryland!).
Global warming
The United Nations estimates that it is still possible to avoid catastrophe due to global warming by halving carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. Experts from the international panel on climate change recommend reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 at the latest, in order to limit global warming to an additional 2°C on average in a century. These scientists believe that to lay the foundations for a radical change in behavior, States must devote 1% of their gross domestic product to the fight against global warming which should, among other things, cause more famine in Africa. The UN report shows, in fact, that it is the poorest who will suffer the most from this phenomenon attributable to human activities.
