16th Arab School Sports Games
Since its creation on March 22, 1945, the League of Arab States has always been interested in organizing sporting events with the aim of strengthening the bonds of friendship and fraternity between young people. Among the multiple sporting activities sponsored by the League of Arab States are the Arab school sports games. The latter were organized for the first time, in Beirut, in 1949, and were followed by other editions: in Cairo in 1951, in Damascus in 1952, then a second time in Lebanon in 1954. But it was in 1962 that the Council of the League of Arab States decided to regularly organize Arab sporting activities, under the name of 'Arab School Sports Games'. These competitions had an educational character and allowed, in addition to bringing young people together on a cultural level, the preparation and improvement of their skills in all sporting disciplines.
The decision relating to the organization of these games was adopted both by the Arab technical commission for youth and sports during the sixteenth session held in Saudi Arabia from May 1 to 7, 1976, and by the Arab ministers of youth and sports, meeting during their 4th congress from October 9 to 11, 1976, in Damascus. This decision was approved by the Council of the Arab League during its seventy-sixth session held in March 1977.
The periodic organization of the editions was marked either by constant and regular stability or by momentary ruptures.
During its 28th session, held on March 7, 2005 in Egypt, the Council of Arab Ministers entrusted Algeria with the organization of the 16th games, scheduled from September 1 to 14, 2006.
Six disciplines are included in the competition program which will see the participation of nearly 5,000 athletes between boys and girls. These games will be implemented in partnership between the Ministry of Youth and Sports and that of National Education.
