National Tree Day
Atlas pistachio tree (Pistacia atlantica)
The Atlas pistachio tree is a tree from arid and semi-arid regions. It tolerates strong winds and long periods of drought. It can reach 15 m in height and 5 m in diameter. The leaves are deciduous and the dark green fruits when ripe are edible.
Its fruits are drupes the size of a pea, slightly oval, flattened and rich in oil. The seeds are edible. The bark produces a resin used for medicinal purposes and the tree is used as wood for crafts.
This species is very widespread in southern Algeria (semi-arid and arid regions).
