“Icosim” means “seagull island”. Its construction is attributed to the Phoenicians around the 9th century before the Christian era.
A place of trade and commerce, its role was somewhat reduced four centuries later. With the arrival of the Romans, it regained its influence and its name was Latinized to become “Icosium”.
