“The year of Arab culture” was first of all an idea whose realization would allow the opening of Arab countries to the world as well as the execution of various projects of a humanitarian nature likely to anchor high values, to consolidate Arab ties in the economic, social and cultural fields, and to promote dialogue between cultures since it represents one of the principles set out in the charter of the United Nations, consecrated during the year 2001, proclaimed the year of the United Nations for dialogue between civilizations.
However, it was from 1996 that Arab countries began celebrating the Arab cultural year. The latter, which is of great importance, aims to:
- encourage creativity and promote the cultural and civilizational heritage of Arab countries.
- open up to multiple human cultures and civilizations with the aim of promoting mutual understanding, friendship and peace in addition to the consecration of the principle of dialogue between civilizations.
Cairo was the first Arab capital to host this cultural event, subsequently followed by other Arab capitals: Tunis, Chardja, Beirut, Riyadh, Kuwait, Amman, Rabat, Sanaa, Khartoum and then Muscat.
Algeria, for its part, had applied during the year 2000, in Riyadh in the hope of organizing the event in question and it will see its wishes come to fruition after the approval of the Council of Arab Ministers of Culture, which will warmly welcome the Algerian initiative.
At the moment, our country is putting the final touches to then kick off this large-scale cultural event under the name “Algiers, capital of Arab culture 2007”.
The Year of Arab Culture, whose inauguration is scheduled for January 12, will be celebrated throughout the current year. As part of this event, a program as rich as it is varied has been developed containing, among other activities, the publishing and translation of a significant number of books, the production of films, a rich theatrical production, as well as the organization of a series of exhibitions and festivals, etc.
The Algiers, Capital of Arab Culture event will certainly offer multiple opportunities to build new bridges and strengthen communication between representatives of an Arab culture, known for its diverse and multiple contributions to the progress of humanity.
Algeria conceals an important cultural heritage and a great civilizational legacy, each stemming from its glorious history. This history which allows it to take its rightful place among Arab countries. Therefore, the organization of the Arab cultural year by Algeria remains sufficient proof of its great ambition to be a radiant cultural center.
