Born after independence in 1962, the National Gendarmerie is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its creation this year, 2007. It was created to ensure the execution of laws and regulations, ensure public order and security and the surveillance of the countryside and communications routes.
This commemoration rightly comes to inform the citizen about one of the main components of the country responsible for fighting against multifaceted crime. A republican institution, serving the State and the citizen, its missions have extended to the surveillance of land borders. To accomplish its public security missions, the national gendarmerie has territorial units, judicial police, road safety, law enforcement and specialized units.
Faced with the rise of multifaceted, aggressive, underground crime, weaving networks and taking advantage of new communication and information technologies, the national gendarmerie has adapted its organization and its methods of investigation by opening up to research centers and the university for the implementation of an ambitious modernization program, and to civil society by undertaking concrete awareness and prevention actions.
It has also chosen to support its development by opening up to legal sciences, thanks to which crimes will be clarified and the freedoms of citizens preserved.
The national gendarmerie, through the dissemination of its units throughout the national territory and its anchoring in society, displays this desire to be of great public service, attentive to the legitimate security concerns demanded by the citizen. The dynamics it is experiencing are in line with the objectives of the public authorities to establish a coherent and effective national security policy.
