It was on November 12, 1830 that it was decided to build a key performance hall in the city of Algiers. In 1832, this room was transferred to the admiralty then to the rue des consuls, to the Place des Martyrs. Its capacity was 800 places. On August 10, 1850, the governor of Algiers decreed the construction of the “Algiers Opera” to the west of Place Bresson, currently Port Scùd. In May 1853, the Algiers opera house was named “the imperial theater”. In Renaissance style, this monument with a 30m facade is dominated from above by four allegorical statues and an imperial eagle with outstretched wings. It acquired a great reputation after the visit of Emperor Napoleon III and the Empress on May 11, 1865.
