Water and Sustainable Development - Zaragoza international exhibition
Spain will host from June 14 to September 14, 2008 in one of its largest metropolises, Zaragoza, the first international exhibition under the theme “Water and sustainable development”. This event will see the participation of more than 70 countries and will welcome around 8 million visitors.
With the aim of bringing change in the field of water resources management and raising general awareness of water-related problems, the Zaragoza International Exhibition is designed as a space dedicated to dialogue around water and sustainable development.
At this event, Algeria, whose history goes back thousands of years, will present itself as a country which has succeeded in overcoming difficulties and meeting challenges to regain its place in the concert of nations.
Like cultural activities, this exhibition will be a framework conducive to the maintenance of partnerships likely to have socio-economic and political repercussions that are largely and mutually beneficial to Algeria and other partners.
Therefore, Algeria's participation in this major event consists, on the one hand, of promoting and enhancing the national ecological heritage relating to water on the basis of: “water civilizational heritage of Algeria”; on the other hand, to publicize all the efforts made to this end for its own development and that of its water and ecological resources, on the basis of: “water, a priority and a challenge for the socio-economic development of modern Algeria”.
As such, Algeria, an emerging country, has initiated programs to develop and protect its environment by proceeding, among other things, to the registration of its 42 sites which extend over three (03) million hectares in the Ramsar list of wetlands of international importance.
This ranking allowed Algeria to rise to the eighth country in the world due to its wealth of wetlands which are among the most precious resources in terms of biological diversity and natural productivity. Wetlands play an important role in planetary balance, they provide shelter for many living species and act as regulators in the event of flooding or drought. The classification of wetlands by the Ramsar Convention (Iran) demonstrates a clear desire to manage them to ensure lasting protection.
To this end, the international exhibition in Zaragoza aims to be a space for the exchange of innovative experiences. It will allow the sharing of ideas and solutions to set in motion horizons based on resolutely sustainable development.
