Kateb Yacine (1929-1989)
Born in 1929 in Constantine in eastern Algeria. After Koranic school, he entered French school and high school. At the age of 15, he experienced the events of May 8, 1945. In the terrible repression that followed, he was arrested, brutalized then imprisoned. Once released, Kateb Yacine went into exile in France. He held several jobs before joining the National Liberation Front (FLN) as FLN representative in several capitals. After independence, he devoted himself to writing and theater. Despite the exclusion, his contributions constitute the beginning of contemporary Algerian literature. “Nedjma” published in 1956 is the major work that made Kateb Yacine a great writer.
To the credit of this work, Kateb Yacine is the author of several other publications:
“The Circle of Retaliation” published in 1956,
“The Man with the Rubber Sandals” published in 1970.
He is also the author of several theatrical plays. Kateb Yacine visited several countries including Italy, Russia, Belgium and China. He died in Grenoble in France on October 28, 1989. Kateb Yacine will remain one of the great symbols of the conscience of Algeria.
