29th edition of the Beijing Summer Olympic Games
The Olympic Games are the largest sporting event in the world. This event, which consists of a set of competitions organized every four years, is divided into summer and winter editions. Ancient Greece was at the origin of the organization of the very first editions of the Olympic Games, the latter of which subsequently experienced a rupture.
At the end of the 19th century, the Olympic Games were reintroduced by the French Baron Pierre Frédy de Coubertin. In 1896, the first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens (Greece).
The world Olympic movement has around 22 editions of Winter Olympic Games and 28 editions of Summer Olympic Games, taking into account for these the three editions planned respectively in 1916, 1940 and 1944 and which were postponed following the two world wars.
At the Beijing Olympics which will take place from August 8 to 24, 2008, Algeria will mark its eleventh participation in the Olympic Games. In 1964, the first Algerian participation in this sporting event was recorded in Tokyo (Japan). She was crowned with a set of medals including 4 gold medals, 1 silver medal and 7 bronze medals.
Regarding the 29th edition of the Summer Olympic Games which will be hosted by Beijing, capital of People's China under a logo symbolizing the "Beijing dance", Algeria will be represented by its team led by the Algerian Olympic Committee. This training will take part in around 13 disciplines included in the program of the Beijing Olympic Games, among others, athletics, rowing, boxing, volleyball, cycling, wrestling, judo, badminton, table tennis, foil, swimming, weightlifting and kayaks.
