Ferhat El Mekki Abbas was born on October 24, 1899 in Taher (Jijel). He completed his primary studies in Jijel and his secondary studies in Skikda then Constantine. In 1923, he joined the University of Algiers to continue his studies in pharmacy.
In 1924, he founded the “Association of Muslim Students of North Africa” which he chaired from 1927 to 1931. He also contributed to the edition of weeklies, such as the “Association of Muslim Students of North Africa”.
Holding a doctorate in pharmacy in 1933, Ferhat Abbas settled in Sétif where he actively participated in the Algerian youth movement and became a municipal councilor three years later. In 1938, he denounced the indigenous code and created the “Algerian Popular Union”. He published the “Manifesto of the Algerian People” and founded the “Association of Friends of the Manifesto and Freedom”, in 1942 and 1944 respectively.
After the massacres of May 8, 1945, Ferhat Abbas was arrested and imprisoned. The “Association of Friends of the Manifesto and Freedom” was dissolved.
In 1955, he announced from Cairo his joining the National Liberation Front party, considered the official and ultimate representative of the Algerian people.
Following the Soummam congress held on August 20, 1956, Ferhat Abbas was designated a member of the National Council of the Algerian Revolution, then a member of the Coordination and Execution Committee in 1957, to subsequently become president of the first provisional government of the Algerian Republic. His mandate lasted from September 19, 1958 until August 1961 when he was responsible for carrying out diplomatic missions in Morocco.
Ferhat Abbas took part in the different phases of negotiations undertaken with the French authorities claiming the independence of Algeria, and which resulted on March 18, 1962 in the Evian Accords. He returned to Algeria on June 30, 1962.
Following an incurable illness, Ferhat Abbas died on December 23, 1985.
