The city of Constantine, located in the north-east of Algeria, is characterized by a unique geography. Sitting on an enormous rock dug in the middle by the Rhummel ravine, it contains numerous bridges which were built to connect the two parts of the city. In addition to their practical aspect, these bridges are true works of art.
The El Kantara bridge
The El Kantara bridge constitutes the main access route to the city of Constantine. In 1185 all the Roman bridges were destroyed and only the El Kantara bridge was restored. In 1304 it was destroyed again to be subsequently restored during the year 1792. Following the passage of an infantry detachment, the El Kantara bridge collapsed on March 18, 1857. But it was rebuilt in 1864 in order to connect the old rock and its national street to the Mansourah road. The El Kantara bridge was a cast iron arch 128 meters long, raised 125 meters vertically and dominating the Oued du Rhummel.
