The town of Tebessa is the capital of the wilaya which bears the same name. Located in the far east of Algeria, 45 km from the Algerian-Tunisian border. It rises to an altitude of 960 meters and its surface area is estimated at 13,396 km2. An artisanal center, it is also an important commercial and agricultural center and has a large number of mining and forestry resources. It contains numerous remains dating from Roman times. An ancient Byzantine wall surrounds the entire city and one of its four gates is a triumphal arch. It is also the birthplace of Sheikh Larbi Tebessi, founding member of the Association of Algerian Muslim Ulemas.
