National Day
The number of disabled people is constantly growing. This category of people constitutes approximately 10% of the world's population, the equivalent of 500 million physically and mentally disabled people.
The Arab World has an average of 15% of its population with disabilities. In Algeria, the National Statistics Office lists 1.8 million disabled people.
Like able-bodied people, the Algerian State has made the necessary efforts to care for disabled people by guaranteeing them all the material and financial means allowing them to integrate professionally and socially, and to be fully and effectively involved in the national development process.
Thus, this category of people has continued to occupy its rightful place by establishing itself particularly in the field of sport. Indeed, the Algerian disabled sports selection was the best ambassador who, through his multiple achievements, was able to represent Algeria with dignity and honor during various international sporting events.
Following its participation in the Olympic Games organized in 2004 in Athens (Greece), the Algerian disabled sports team collected a total of 13 medals including 6 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 5 bronze medals.
This was not the only success since, four years later, during the games of the 29th Olympiad hosted by the Chinese capital, Beijing, Algerian athletes in the category in question were also crowned with a total of 15 medals including 4 gold medals, 3 silver medals and 8 bronze medals.
The credit for the creation of disabled sports goes to the English doctor and professor, Ludwig Guttman, who organized the first disabled sports games on July 22, 1948 in Great Britain. Today, the Paralympics have 23 officially recognized games including 19 summer games and 4 winter games, adapted to different types of disabilities.
Algeria has proclaimed the date of March 14 each year as “national day of people with disabilities”. The commemoration of this day confirms the consecration of the principle relating to the protection and promotion of people with disabilities.
The celebration of the National Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote a better understanding of the problems related to disability and to mobilize all energies to ensure respect for the dignity, rights and well-being of people with disabilities.
