2nd Pan-African Cultural Festival of Algiers
Algeria will host from July 5 to 20, 2009 the second edition of the Pan-African cultural festival. Forty years after the first edition of this cultural event in 1969 and which was placed under the sign of “freedom” due to the liberation movements marked across the African continent, it is presented this time under the slogan of “the African renaissance” thus reflecting the culture of the entire continent.
The decision to organize the second pan-African cultural festival dates back to 2005 when the first conference of African Ministers of Culture was held, a decision ratified by the African Union summit in Khartoum in 2006, which adopted, on the occasion, the charter of the African renaissance.
Around forty member countries of the African Union will participate in this major cultural event. Home to a large community of African origin throughout the world, the United States and Brazil will also participate in this event which will certainly have new dimensions because the majority of African countries were at the time of the first edition under the yokes of colonialism.
Activities as rich as they are diverse are included in the program of the second pan-African festival “Panaf’2009” which will have around 8,000 participants. These activities are spread over different areas such as cinema, theater, music, visual arts, literature, heritage, etc.
Also, a large parade is preparing to line the streets of the capital on the day of the official inauguration of the festival in its second edition.
The organization of the Pan-African festival by Algeria, which is also part of the strengthening of the African dimension of national culture and its interference with other cultures on the continent, will undoubtedly be an opportunity to once again confirm the belonging of our country and its attachment to the values of Pan-Africanism.
