Algerian Electricity and Gas (Sonelgaz)
SONELGAZ, 40 years serving the economic and social development of the country.
On July 28, 2009, SONELGAZ celebrated its fortieth anniversary.
The celebration of this anniversary takes place in a particular context, that of the completion of the process of transformation of Sonelgaz into an Industrial Group begun in 2002, following the promulgation of the law on electricity and the distribution of gas by pipelines (law n°02-01 of February 5, 2002).
A major public service, Sonelgaz was, from 1969 until the beginning of 2002, the historic operator in the fields of production, transport and distribution of electricity as well as the transport and distribution of gas by pipeline.
Today, Sonelgaz is a Group made up of 39 companies (including six joint ventures) operating in the fields of electricity production, transport and distribution of electricity and gas as well as in the fields of Engineering, new information and communication technologies, services in general but also in the fields of works for the construction of energy infrastructures.
Since its creation, Sonelgaz has had to face several challenges. The first was to take charge, by means of the post-independence era, of the management of the public service and the operation of an industrial tool vital to the life of the nation. The Sonelgaz Group today has a total workforce of more than 60,000 employees.
Thus, several generations have succeeded one another to ensure development and carry out major projects in order to ensure the satisfaction of the growing needs of an Algeria in full economic and social growth.
Thanks to large-scale investment programs and the determined will of public authorities, small towns and villages, whether in the far south or in mountainous regions, have benefited from electrical energy and accessed the comfort of modern life in the same way as residents of large cities.
Like rural electrification in the past, public gas distribution programs of exceptional size are being implemented to supply the majority of regions including the most remote centers of Algeria.
These programs have made it possible to raise, to date, the electricity coverage rate to 98% and the natural gas penetration rate to 43%. These rates reflect Sonelgaz's 40 years of activity serving the country's development and the well-being of its populations.
