The 21st century has seen a very clear increase in life expectancy as well as a decline in the aging of populations, particularly in developed countries, much more than in the rest of the world.
Thus, the significant changes dating back to the industrial period have led to a drop in mortality due on the one hand to the improvement in the standard of living and hygiene conditions and on the other hand to advances in medicine which have allowed a fairly great control of infectious diseases thanks to the discovery of vaccines and antibiotics. Although it remains to be clarified that the increase in the number of elderly people and the aging of populations are also due to the decline in the birth rate.
But this observation does not apply, unfortunately, to all countries, particularly those in the Third World which are currently suffering from serious political and socio-economic problems.
Generally speaking, in developing countries, economic inequality leads to lower life expectancy at birth. The main causes of morbidity and mortality are infectious and parasitic diseases, diseases due to lack of hygiene and malnutrition.
In Algeria, mainly we see a certain fragility of this segment of the population. The various socio-economic, health, human and other problems experienced by the elderly are the subject of particular attention by the competent authorities with the aim of equitable care commensurate with the problems and situations experienced by these vulnerable social categories.
In our country, there are adequate structures allowing real care for the elderly, whether within the framework of social security for those who have worked, retirement funds, solidarity mechanisms such as free medical assistance, pensions and specialized reception structures.
Other solidarity measures are planned and tend to provide families caring for elderly and destitute people with the material means necessary for a dignified and secure life.
All its actions are intended to ensure the minimum of comfort and security for our elders who have given us so much and who expect the often irreplaceable family warmth.
