People's National Army
The National People's Army is the worthy heir of the National Liberation Army. Its role is to preserve national autonomy and sovereignty and to defend them against any threat to the security and integrity of the national territory. The People's National Army is based on six force commands.
Land Forces Command: Created in May 1986 to replace the combat armament directorate established in March 1971. This command was founded with the aim of ensuring the success of armament operations, developing them and achieving a high level of combat preparation.
Air Force Command: Following independence, the bases of the current air forces were established by a core of pilots to ensure sovereignty over the airspace. In 1986, the air defense of the territory was separated from the military aviation directorate and transformed into an air force command with a new organization.
Naval Forces Command: The Algerian navy was created in 1963. Placed under the control of the staff of the People's National Army, this command saw during the year 1973 the creation of the National Coast Guard Directorate with its three networks East, West and Center. It has maritime stations, coastal control towers and maritime teams along its borders.
Territorial Air Defense Forces Command: this command was created in 1988 with the mission of territorial air defense. It has equipped itself with ultra-modern equipment and radar systems in order to modernize its ranks. He is also responsible for organizing the aerial search direction, which requires him to coordinate between the different national and even international organizations during search and rescue operations.
Command of the National Gendarmerie: Created following independence to ensure the application of laws and regulations, the national gendarmerie has seen the establishment of basic infrastructure in addition to the creation of new units in order to strengthen its network across the national territory. In recent years, it has also benefited from development plans to fully exploit its potential, upgrade its professional skills and modernize its operating methods.
Command of the Republican Guard: Created upon independence, it consisted of a small musical troupe and horsemen. In 1972, a decision to create the Republican Guard was promulgated. In October 2006, the Republican Guard was transformed into an autonomous military force carrying out its missions under the ultimate and exclusive authority of the President of the Republic.
