Fort of the Emperor (Bordj Moulay Hassan - Algiers)
Most of those who visited Algiers and wrote about it spoke of this fort because of its important role in defending the southern side of the city and the port. It has had several names including Bordj Moulay Hassan, in memory of its builder, Hassan Pasha, who built it in 1545. Having been the subject of attacks, it subsequently underwent fortifications and it became strong in the sense of the term around the year 1580.
The Emperor's Fort rises 230 m above sea level.
It originally protected the south side of Algiers. The defense system was subsequently completed.
This fort was located in the middle of an immense area visible from the road along the sea and all the east side of Algiers.
It is in the form of a rectangle 150m long and 100m wide. Its walls with embrasures rise to a height of 10m.
