Gouraya Fort
Located on the highest peak of the mountain at 672m above the sea, a position which gives it considerable importance, the fort constitutes by its location a strategic point par excellence which allows it to dominate the entire region.
Bejaia taken by the Vandals in 430, was called by the latter
“Gouraya” word which means in their language “Gor” city and “Aya” mountain; This is where Jebel de Gouraya got its name.
Built on probably Hammadite, even ancient, bases, during the Spanish occupation from 1509 it was transformed into a fort, then redeveloped by the French, as a surveillance and lookout point.
Popular legend attributes a mystical character to this location as it is said that the saint called “Yemma Gouraya” lived here. There is a mausoleum there which continues to be visited by the surrounding populations and receives thousands of people each year.
