Martyr's Shrine
Overlooking the bay of Algiers, Maqam Echahid (Martyr's Sanctuary) located in the El Madania district, is a monument which was erected in 1982 on the occasion of the celebration of the 20th Anniversary of national independence (July 5, 1962) in memory of the dead of the war of national liberation.
The monument made up of three stylized palm fronds rises to a height of 92 meters. The three palms support at 47 meters, a circular room with a diameter of 10 meters and a height of 25 meters topped by a 6 meter dome. An elevator provides access to this circular room from which you overlook the bay of Algiers and the entire Mitidja valley. The whole resting on an esplanade where the eternal flame burns covering a crypt, a conference room and the underground Jihad museum where objects and living testimonies of the liberation struggle are exhibited.
The construction of the work was, in its time, a real architectural challenge due to the constraints inherent in the geometry of the whole, in particular the curvature of the palm fronds, the location of the site on the edge of a steep cliff and the high seismicity of the region.
The immense monument inaugurated on April 15, 1982, is located on a site of nearly 146 ha including several socio-cultural infrastructures.
