Door knocker of the Sidi Boumedienne Mosque of Tlemcen
Tlemcen, Capital of Islamic Culture 2011
Tlemcen, capital of the Zianides, will be the capital of culture of the Islamic world throughout 2011. This cultural event comes in the wake of Algiers, capital of Arab culture which took place in 2007. These two events mark in a very beautiful way the return of Algeria to the international cultural scene.
Selected in 2008 by the Islamic Organization of Education, Culture and Sciences, Tlemcen, the pearl of the Maghreb, has distinguished itself by its charm, its appeal and the richness of its cultural heritage.
This event required special arrangements to provide adequate reception commensurate with the event. Huge preparations have been undertaken over the last three years as well as significant investments have been made such as the installation of new equipment, the modernization of infrastructure for major cultural activities and the development of the districts and mosques of the old Medina of Tlemcen as well as numerous archaeological sites.
Tlemcen will therefore be ready for the meeting of this 25th edition where an average of 50 Muslim countries will be present.
Heritage in all its forms will be in the spotlight with all the archaeological sites and treasures of the city, the splendors of Tlemcenian craftsmanship and the cultural and artistic events which will be programmed without obscuring the religious aspect where Ijtihad will be in the spotlight.
Also, this title of capital of Islamic culture awarded to Tlemcen, whose history has had an exceptional impact on the region and beyond, takes on several meanings. It has an international dimension which has linked it to the Islamic world for centuries and whose traces are still alive but also revealing the desire of a city Tlemcen and a country Algeria to register its personality in the era of globalization.
