The First Economic Census
Algeria is preparing to undertake the first economic census in its history. This census consists of surveying all economic entities, all activities and all legal sectors combined, excluding agriculture.
Due to its exhaustiveness and spatial representativeness, the economic census will allow public authorities to have very detailed statistical data.
To take into account new data relating to the socio-economic reality of the country and the needs of different users, carrying out a census has become necessary. It constitutes an important asset for the development of statistical production in line with the needs of the economy. The objectives of the economic census are multiple, including:
- The creation of an exhaustive, reliable and updated directory of legal and natural persons, as well as administrative entities.
- The use of the directory as a sampling base for all surveys of companies (or establishments) and more particularly private sector companies which are not well understood.
- Updating codes and nomenclatures for better adaptation to reality and better comparability with our partners.
- Monitoring and control of parameters and indicators as well as the preparation of sectoral accounts for the national accounts of the different sectors of activity (excluding agriculture): industry, commerce, construction, services, transport.
- The revision of the weightings for the various indicators measuring economic activity, in particular the industrial production index, the industrial producer price index, the rate of utilization of production capacities.
The economic census has two phases. The first concerns the enumeration of all entities, all activities and all sectors combined (excluding agriculture), with a view to establishing a general file of companies and establishments. It will be carried out during the second quarter of 2011. The second phase will establish an in-depth survey to respond to the needs and concerns in terms of economic information, generated by the major economic reforms.
This survey will concern a sample of entities to which a questionnaire will be administered for the collection of all data (physical and accounting). It will take place towards the end of the year after exploitation of the data from the first phase.
