Uses of Information and Communication Technologies - Telecenters
The telecenter is a public space providing users with computers, internet and other information and communication technologies. The objective of the telecenter is the use of technologies to support social, economic and cultural development by reducing the isolation of people, bridging the digital divide and creating new economic opportunities or by offering youth a means of expression and engagement.
In Algeria, telecenters are local structures, equipped with Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for educational and socio-economic purposes. Established, in particular, in remote areas and targeting populations with specific needs and more particularly rural women and young people, these structures must offer products and services in training, information and communication.
Eight wilayates are already affected by the development of telecenters: Adrar, Bouria, Djelfa, Illizi, Naâme, Relizane, Tebessa and Tamanrasset. The telecenters are hosted in the professional training centers, but with a certain autonomy in relation to their operation and the public. It is therefore the Ministry of Training and Vocational Education (MFEP) which is responsible for ensuring the management of the “Telecentres” project in Algeria, assisted in particular, within the framework of international cooperation by specialized bodies, which have been implementing, since 2004, a program to support professional training and development in certain Maghreb countries.
Actions at the international level are carried out regularly, aiming at a wider dissemination of knowledge relating to this specific area providing a platform for its sharing for the telecenter movement and for the different actors and organizations working to achieve social development through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
These events organized in partnership with several countries in Europe and other continents are an opportunity for telecenter experts and practitioners to discuss and highlight the important role of telecenters in improving the quality of life of billions of people, particularly in their ability to find employment, increase productivity and empower themselves, through skills, knowledge and opportunities.
