The Algiers Metro
All urban transport studies in the Algiers metropolitan area carried out since 1970 have resulted in the recommendation of the development of a metro accompanied by a rehabilitation of the transport network.
The design and engineering studies of the Algiers metro, carried out in 1982, succeeded in defining a basic plan consisting of three lines totaling 56 km of line and 54 stations, taking into account the master urban planning plan of Algiers adopted at the time and the identification of a priority section between 'Oued Koriche' and 'Hai El-Badr', 12.5 km long and this, in view of the volume of traffic to be handled along this axis.
Line I, stage l, of the Algiers metro from 'Grande Poste' to 'Hai El Badr' serves 10 stations including 9 underground over 9.5 km. Fourteen modern and comfortable trains are planned for the operation of this first metro line, each train with a length of 108.5 m can transport 1,234 people and reach a maximum speed of 70 km/h.
During the commissioning of line l, stage l, a transport demand is expected, at peak hour of around 21,000 passengers in each direction, this demand should reach in the long term on the busiest section around 40,000 passengers per hour and per direction, with a time interval between two successive trains of 3 minutes and 20 seconds.
The metro will make it possible to counter the demographic explosion and the resulting need for collective transport with the required conditions of comfort and safety, by having regular and available transport thanks to very close rotations. It will also make it possible to gain space for communities (decongestion of roads) and reduce environmental damage (atmospheric pollution and noise pollution).
A 4 km section between 'Bachdjarah' and 'El Harrach', made up of four stations, would be put into service in winter 2012, two other extensions of line 1 are planned for 2012 and 2013.
