The “Ouled-Djellal” sheep makes up the most important ethnic group of Algerian sheep breeds, occupying most of the country with the exception of a few regions in the southwest and southeast. It is the true sheep of the steppe, the most adapted to nomadism. It is an entirely white sheep. The wool covers the entire body up to the knees and hocks, its head is white and its horns are spiraled. These long, strong legs support walking long distances.
It is a breed resistant to arid zones, it uses very well the different pastures of the high plateaus of the steppe and the Saharan rangelands.
The Ouled-Djellal breed includes three varieties:
- Chellalia variety: This is the type of sheep that is smaller in size and lighter, it is bred for wool production.
- Heavy variety (HODNIA): This well-proportioned sheep is more sought after by breeders because of its body weight.
- Djellalia variety: Long-lined sheep, long-legged, adapted to great nomadism. It produces fine white wool.
