50th Anniversary of Victory Day (March 19, 1962)
The anniversary of Victory Day, corresponding to March 19, is one of the most significant national events for the Algerian people, it commemorates a new birth of a great ancestral country after all the suffering and trials it has endured and after long and hard decades which have followed one another and which have forced our nation, during all this time, to go through various forms of endurance, repression and humiliation.
The talks which took place in Evian from March 7 to 18, 1962 between the French government and the National Liberation Front led to the following conclusion: a ceasefire is concluded. Military operations and armed struggle throughout Algerian territory will be brought to an end on March 19, 1962.
The implementation of self-determination and the organization of public authorities in Algeria during the transitional period were defined by mutual agreement. The formation, following the self-determination of an independent and sovereign State, appears to be consistent with Algerian realities.
The day before March 19, 1962, the French government ceded its powers over Algeria and the Sahara to the provisional government of the Algerian republic, thus the armed struggle of the Algerian people to regain their independence ended after 132 years of colonization.
Today, it is up to us to remember all these pages of heroism and glory and to banish all images of despair and suffering. It is also up to us to transcend the event itself, by making victory a reference which must inspire all the actions we undertake to fulfill the growing expectations of the nation's children.
