Cheikh Larbi Djedri Tebessi, whose real name is Ferhati Larbi, was called tebessi in reference to Tebessa, where he was born in 1895. After receiving primary education at the zaouia of Nefta in Tunisia, he went to the Ez-Zitouna mosque then continued his studies in Cairo where he obtained the “El Alamia” diploma.
During the creation of the association of Algerian Muslim Ulemas, he was one of its most eminent members. He was appointed secretary general in 1953, then vice-president after the death of Sheikh Ibn Badis.
He assumed the presidency of the Association after the departure of Bachir El Ibrahimi to the Orient.
In 1957 the French army carried out his kidnapping and then his assassination in obscure conditions.
