Under the reign of the Hammadites at the end of the 11th century, Bejaia had six entrance gates. Only two remain today: Bab El Bahr, commonly called Sarrasine Gate which opens onto the port, and Bab El Bounoud, currently Fouka Gate, in the upper town. Built at the time of Sultan El Nacer around 1070, the Sarrasine gate which gives access to the sea is part of the city's fortification system.
When disembarking at the Sarrazine gate (Bab El Bahar), the traveler encounters an old stone and brick arch, carefully preserved.
Today this historical legacy is left to itself to the alterations of man and nature
