ICT for improving road safety
World Telecommunications and Information Society Day, celebrated each year on May 17, marks the anniversary of the signing, in 1865, of the first international telegraph convention which led to the creation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
The ITU Council has chosen the theme 'ICT for improving road safety' for the 2013 edition. This theme is also in line with the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly which proclaims the decade (2011-2020) as a decade of action for road safety.
Every year, 1.3 million people die and between 20 and 50 million are injured in road accidents and the resulting global economic losses are enormous.
Algeria, like other countries, is celebrating World Telecommunications and Information Society Day by developing a rich program of activities aimed at promoting the use of ICT to improve road safety, in all the wilayas of the country and in collaboration between the Ministry of Post and Information and Communication Technologies and the Ministry of Transport.
