Prehistoric Arts Anthropomorphic Betyl
Anthropomorphic betyl: Origin: Tabelbalet (Tassili N'Ajjer)
Dimensions: Height 33cm / Width: 19cm
The first mention of the Tabelbalet betyles was given by Captain G. Touchard in 1905. He reported about 12 km from Tabelbalet “a small wadi at the mouth of which there is a mass of interesting stones”. This betyl is one of five statuettes that were discovered on this site. Cylindrical shaped part, it is terminated at the upper part by a spherical segment cap. The eyebrow arches are curved and asymmetrical, reaching up to the base of the nose. The eyes are barely hollow, the edge of the face and the area corresponding to the mouth were coated with red ocher by the Tuareg.
