International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People
In its resolution 68/12, the General Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People to organize, in cooperation with relevant Governments, United Nations agencies, intergovernmental organizations and civil society organizations, activities to be held during the International Year of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in 2014.
The objective of the International Year is to promote solidarity with the Palestinian people and to breathe new life into and strengthen the mobilization of the international community in favor of the realization of their inalienable rights, which have been denied them for too long. The International Year will bring the following elements to the forefront of international concerns:
- The themes concerning the question of Palestine to which the Committee gives priority, namely the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, starting with the right to self-determination and independence, and support for the peace process with a view to obtaining a permanent settlement in accordance with international law and UN resolutions on the question;
- Obstacles to the continuation of the peace process, especially those requiring urgent measures, such as colonization, the situation in Jerusalem, the blockade of Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the Occupied Palestinian Territory;
- The mobilization of action at the international, regional and national levels with a view to a global, just and lasting settlement of the question of Palestine.
