International Cancer Day
The World Cancer Control Union has proclaimed February 4 of each year as World Cancer Day, working to draw public attention to this disease which is becoming global and to raise awareness of the seriousness of cancer and its rapid spread. Cancer is an umbrella term that includes a group of diseases that exceed hundreds of types and can affect different parts of the human body. It is also characterized by rapid progression and spread of abnormal cells which develop at high rates, or even metastasize, thus reaching other parts of the human body and causing the death of the affected person.
The progression of cancer goes through a long process of transformation from the normal cell to the cancerous cell, following mutual contact linking humans to three external factors. These are physical carcinogenic factors (UV light, ionizing radiation), chemical carcinogenic factors (cigarette smoke, food pollutants) and finally biological carcinogenic factors such as some viruses, bacteria and parasites.
Despite preventive measures and very advanced revolutionary methods of treatment, the disease of cancer and according to the statistics put forward by the World Health Organization (WHO) continues to spread whether in developed or developing countries.
In Algeria, cancer disease takes a significant toll on the lives of people every day, which has prompted specialists, very concerned about this situation, to sound the alarm and announce an urgent plan to combat it, the first of its kind in our country, under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with various associative movements active in the socio-health field. A plan, it should be remembered, which is likely to reduce the death rate recorded in our country. The increase in the rate of cancer patients in recent years is mainly due to environmental and genital factors, in addition to bad habits very widespread in Algerian society which consist of excessive consumption of fats, an unbalanced diet and insufficient consumption of fruits and vegetables. The best known carcinogenic products, however, are food colorings, preservatives, polluted air, cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, in addition to long exposure to the sun without the slightest protection, especially for children.
