The mosque was founded in the 3rd century AH by El Cheikh El Hadj Mohamed El Tayeb Kerafi and is located in the center of the city. It is characterized by its ancient Islamic architectural style, and a well to provide water.
The mosque has undergone other improvements through several eras, such as the most important restoration in 1946. Since its founding, it has become a gathering place for worshipers for worship, study and education. It represented a scientific influence in which students gathered for lessons and for memorization of the Holy Quran. These lessons were given by high-ranking religious people. The mosque also hosted other activities such as charity and marriage contracts or conciliation. For several centuries it was also frequented for Friday prayers by worshipers from the outskirts of the city and others.
