Men's Outfit:
Since the 16th century the components of the traditional male costume have remained the same, pants with wide pleats called (sarouel testifa) or (el-gaâda), a shirt in light fabric with long sleeves, and a vest which bears the name (b'diîya), cut in velvet or satin fabrics which closes from top to bottom, decorated with sober and refined embroidery stopping over the pants, a belt (Hzem) encircled all at the waist, a (djabadouli), a collarless jacket, which does not close and very often it wears ornaments on the front and on the sleeves, all covered with an ecru cape or burnous.
Accessories accompany the male costume, walking shoes (çabbat laârbi) in leather, the head covered with a head covering (chéchia) in red felt.
Women's outfit:
Since the 20th century with European influence, the clothing of the Algiers women had undergone some modifications.
The costume is composed of loose pants called (sarouel m'daour) originally it was an outing garment (sarouel azzanqa) and a jacket with a more discreet neckline and a fitted cut at the waist with a basque hence the name (caraco).
The enrichment of the jacket with refined ornaments worked with gold or silver thread had restricted the wearing of the costume mainly during ceremonies and family celebrations, embellished with accessories; a fringed scarf (M’harmet laftoul) and women’s shoes (çobbat el foulia) which replace the slippers decorated with gold embroidery.
A khit arouh head jewel (thread of the soul), anklets (rdayefs) and a few necklaces and bracelets to enhance the outfit.
