150th Anniversary of the International Telecommunications Union ITU
Since 1865, the International Telecommunications Union has continued to connect the world to the most advanced and innovative means of communication, from the era of the telegraph to the age of the Internet.
The celebration of ITU's 150th anniversary will be an opportunity to continue to encourage innovation and access to new technologies for all and to strengthen relationships between all professionals in the ICT ecosystem, including public administrations, public and private sector companies, and non-profit organizations.
With the help of its members, including Algeria since May 1963, the ITU works so that everyone can benefit from the advantages of modern communication technologies with efficiency, security, ease and above all at lower cost.
Thus, for 40 years, Algeria, as a pioneer, has propelled itself into the field of information and communication technologies with the inauguration of the first satellite telecommunications station at the Lakhdaria Space Telecommunications Center and 47 earth stations deployed across the south of the country, during the year 1975.
Algeria joined INTELSAT in 1974 to keep pace with the most modern nations and maintain its relations with its regional and international partners. On a practical level, this materialized with the construction of the Lakhdaria Teleport in 1975, attached to Algérie Télécom Satellite, a subsidiary of the ALGERIE TELECOM group, since 2006.
Algérie Télécom Satellite aims to provide the different segments of Algerian society with the most recent advances in information and communication technologies through:
- Opening up the most remote regions of the national territory thanks to VSAT networks and the Algerian domestic network (DOMSAT), based on satellite telecommunications and made up of 47 earth stations.
- Contribution to economic and social development thanks to its deployment among businesses and sovereignty structures throughout the national territory.
- Opening the doors of the technological future to citizens, by making all telephone and Internet services available via satellite, particularly in areas that are insufficiently served or devoid of traditional telecommunications means.
- The provision of emergency communications networks which help to ensure essential telecommunications links for the coordination of relief and rescue operations in the event of a disaster.
