Water pepper knotweed is an annual plant 20 to 80 cm high, with an erect, branched stem. The leaves are oblong-lanceolate or lanceolate, the grains of the leaves are almost glabrous, flowering from August to September. The chewed leaves sting the tongue like chili pepper.
It is found in humid places quite rarely in the edges of the tidal ditches of Réghaïa, it is common in the El kala region.
Water knotweed seems to contain flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, it has stimulating, diuretic, emmenagogue (stimulate blood flow) properties. It is effective against amenorrhea. It also has anti-oxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, etc. properties.
