The National Public Museum CIRTA was created at the initiative of the Constantine Archeology Society, baptized in 1852 as the municipal museum of Constantine, located at a place called “Koudiat Aty” opposite the old rock in the city center.
It was built in the Greco-Roman style, a rectangular building with a garden which contains some engravings and sculptures in the middle and a corridor decorated with pillars, it was inaugurated in 1931 in the name of Gustave Mercier its founder until July 5, 1975, renamed Cirta, the ancient and historical name of Constantine.
