The officialization of Tamazight in the Constitution revised on February 7, 2016 is enshrined by: Article 4 which stipulates: “Tamazight is also a national and official language”; “The State works for its promotion and development in all its linguistic varieties in use on the national territory.”
This official language status propels Tamazight towards new horizons of promotion and socialization.
From the 1980s, a renaissance of Amazighness began in Algeria; during the 1990s, the State created the Amazigh Language and Culture Departments in Tizi-Ouzou and Bejaia; a few years later in Bouira and Batna. Thousands of graduates, hundreds of postgraduates and dozens of doctors are trained in these Departments.
Created in 1995, the HCA plays the role of catalyst of energies working for the development and socialization of Tamazight in Algeria; it sets up a strategy for introducing Tamazight into state institutions and its gradual generalization in the education and communication systems.
Today, the issue of a stamp on the occasion of the first year of the officialization of Tamazight immortalizes this memorable event in the millennial journey of the Amazigh language and the Algerian nation.
