Fight against food waste
The frenetic and bulimic mode of consumption which has gradually taken hold in Algerian society brings with it perverse effects for the country. In addition to the fluctuation of prices, the disruption and instability of the market, the excessive food consumption of households has given rise to a new phenomenon unknown in the past "waste", this scourge takes on alarming proportions in the run-up to and during the month of Ramadhan and during the summer season.
Despite all the efforts made by the various stakeholders, food waste reaches 21% of what is thrown into landfills worldwide.
Part of the problem comes down to the long supply chain that food passes through from farm to consumer’s plate.
Losses along the way include damage to crops during harvest or shipping and products that have been qualitatively depreciated before being used or sold to consumers.
Basically, food waste averages a whopping 40% of a nation's total harvest.
The cost of food waste in Algeria is estimated at more than 5 billion dinars or 50 million Euros.
On an ecological level, the loss and waste of food products contribute to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions and the degradation of natural resources.
