International Down Syndrome Day
Officially the date of March 21 was declared World Down Syndrome Day, with the aim of increasing the integration of this category of population, the date of 21 was chosen numerically "Chromosome No. 21" where there is the imbalance. The month of March is the third month of the year symbolizes the triangulation that occurs in the chromosome.
Down syndrome is a chromosomal anomaly resulting in a failure in the nervous system which causes disturbances in psychometric performance and dysfunction of the body.
Trisomy 21 is not of hereditary origin and is not a disease but a pathology at birth, occurs during cell division during the development of the fetus which results in a cell carrying 47 chromosomes instead of 46 chromosomes in the presence of an additional chromosome which is chromosome 21. The latter divides into several similar cells.
The first chromosomal abnormalities appear just at birth, children with Down syndrome will have the same morphological characteristics:
A small, round head with a flattened face and neck
Round face, small nose and flat at the top
Widespread eyes (abnormal pendulum movements in the eyes)
Medium-sized mouth, wide lips
Small ears
Small teeth, abnormally distributed and a delay in the first and second teeth.
Short and fat legs
A small size compared to the average which varies between (1m40 - 1m62)
On a mental level, the brain of the affected child is not damaged and the cells are generally healthy, however the nerves which transmit information from one cell to another are poor and are not at the required speed compared to the able-bodied child.
