The Battle of Ain Zana broke out when a group of mujahideen burst into the French military post of Ain Zana north of Souk Ahras, one of the most important forward posts of the French army. A violent clash occurred with French soldiers, and at the end of this attack the post was conquered by the ALN.
The French losses were considerable, characterized above all by the total annihilation of the post.
