31st anniversary of the national office of legal metrology
The practice of measurement is a mission under the Ministry of Industry and Mines having under its supervision an execution agency represented by the National Office of Legal Metrology (ON ML) which ensures the legality of measurements and the fairness of transactions with the aim of preserving the interests of citizens and the protection of the national economy.
This establishment whose organization and missions are defined by Decree No. 86-250 of September 30, 1986 establishing its creation, The National Office of Legal Metrology manages the entire national metrology system which ensures the protection of the national economy and the citizen in terms of national and international trade as well as the protection of the consumer, the environment, the health and safety of people, it is also responsible for promoting and developing metrology in all industrial activities, as well as well in the areas of manufacturing, use of measuring instruments and related services, also promote the National Metrology network and assist manufacturers of national measuring instruments, undertake any training, improvement, recycling and awareness-raising action, and contributes to the development of legislative and regulatory texts relating to the manufacturing, importation, use, repair and control of measuring instruments and other metrological activities.
On the international scale, Algeria has been a Member of the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) since 1976 and of the African Metrology Organization (AFRIMET).
The international context as well as the level of development of the establishment in recent years, explain the interest that the public authorities give to this discipline and the need to consolidate the national metrology system, the new configuration of which is described by the new law 17/09 of March 27, 2017 relating to the national metrology system, which further regulates the missions conferred on metrology in its entirety, including legal metrology, industrial metrology as well as scientific or fundamental metrology.
